Abstract

Mexican Gothic (2020) by Silvia Moreno-García tells the story
of a Mexican socialité who must rescue her cousin from a
family clinging to the past. Being awarded for her narration
of horror and feminist perspective in 1950´s Mexico. Moreno-
García takes a deconstructive perspective about the stereotypes
of the time. Alongside this, she talks about racism
and colonialism in the book. Considering this, the essay
seeks to connect the postcolonial theory with the gothic terror
in the novel and how it helps the narration of the novel. First,
the next concepts were defined: the postcolonial theory, the
term colonization of power and being, gothic terror and the
novel were defined. Then, three characteristics of Gothic terror
were related to the arguments of the colonization of power
justified with quotes from the novel. Once this analysis was
done, a connection between the theory and the novel could
be found through the genre of Gothic terror. The author presents
her skills and knowledge while opening the conversation
about these issues today such as: racism, misogyny, sexism,
eugenics and colonialism. The novel lends itself to hermetic
analysis for its translation from English to Spanish, or an
analysis of Latin American representation in contemporary
literature.
